When two straight lines for an obtuse or blunt angle, the
natural tendency of the hand is to slur the angle and allow the
lines to form a curve, thus:

The -nt blend is an upward curve, corresponding in
length to the sign for f; the -mt, -md
blend is an upward curve, corresponding in length to v.
The n or m governs the length of the curve;
the curve containing m naturally is longer. At the
beginning of words, short e and short i are omitted
before these blends, as in entry, empty, induce,
etc.
